Some K-X questions...

Hi all! I'm new here *^-^*

So, long story short, did Photography in college, but never made the jump to digital. Haven't properly held an SLR for about 8 years.

Looking to get back into photography now I'm at university, and as my manual SLR was a Pentax, I figured I'd stick with the tried and true formula

DP Reviews hasn't got an in-depth of the Pentax K-X up yet

I was originally looking at the K200D with the kit lens, but it seems like that camera has been discontinued? Nowhere has it, anyway...

So the new entry level DSLR is the Pentax K-X. It's right on the edge of my budget with the kit lens (looking at getting it from SRS Microsystems - read that they are very reputable? I see that they are affiliated with this forum.).

Questions;

1./ What is the build quality of the K-X like compared to that of the K200D - does the K-X include the weather-proofing like the K200D?

2./ I have heard that the K-X (and some other Pentax DSLR's) have some issues with AA batteries, and draining them too fast?

I've read that this is fixed with a firmware update, but how necessary is this? Are 100% of the cameras affected?

It's just that I am on a Mac Book, so most software isn't compatible with my computer. My post-processing is done through GIMP, a great freeware program.

3./ Where's the cheapest place to acquire one?

After all, I am a student It's pretty much the money I saved throughout the year, plus a little from Santa Claus, and the rest from my student loan in January - anywhere having a big January sale?

Cheers!

Ben.

Welocme to the forum Ben. I don't know about January sales, but bear in mind that on 1st January VAT goes back up to 17.5% so prices may increase slightly.

The K-x will be fine and many battery issues are probably related to users not using the recommended battery types. Rechargeables seem to be most favoured.

I would talk to SRS, who have earned their place on this forum with excellent service and good pricing. A rare combination! Forum members get free shipping.

Can't answer the technical stuff

I love my K-x - my very first DSLR

I'm also using a MacBook Pro.

Did a firmware update almost immediately - [ OK with Photomonk's help because I didn't read / comprehend the instructions ]

I'm using iPhoto at present but expect to move to other software a bit further down the line . I've PSE 6 on my Apps at present .

I've been stunned at the service from SRS - ordered twice from them [ Mecablitz Flash and a Lowepro Fast Pack 250 ] and both orders were with me the next morning. Now that's what I call real service.

' Muggins' has a K-x too

No weather sealing but build quality is the same, stainless steel chassis with a plastic cover.

The problem is that the system to see how full the battery is works by looking at the voltage but since there are so many types of batteries and they all behaving differently you can see that's hard to get it right.
There is indeed a firmware update for that and rechargeable batteries of the brand Eneloop seems to work great with the camera.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the welcome, and the advice.

Looks like I'll be going for the K-X. I'll be contacting SRS in January and sorting things out.

Free shipping, you say...?

Hi All,

Looking to buy the K-x bundle.
I have a k-1000 and lots of lenses

Does the K-x have a manual mode and accept older k-1000 lenses?

Yes there is a manual mode. You can use any Pentax lens from the Spotmatic era onwards.

The M42 screw thread lenses are usued in stop down mode and need the Adadper K, as indeed would your K1000.

The K and M series lenses have no electrical contacts and need to be used with stop down metering in manual and Av (aperture priority) modes only, after actiavting a menu option "Using Aperture Ring"

A series lenses are fully functional, but of course manual focus.

All AF lenses are fully functional.

Hope that helps, if you search the forum you will find this discussed many times. Welcome!

L4byr1nth - you should definitely have a play with the Kx, even a short play in the shop will help you judge the build quality and handling. It is small, light and compact. If you are looking for somewhere closer to home to feel one, don't forget that Park Cameras are just up the road from you and their prices are playing leapfrog with SRS at the moment. I have bought from them in the past, as well as SRS. I would have to say that in my experience, SRS were the kings of obtaining the unobtainable. I lost a lens hood for the 12-24, had it on order for months, but SRS got one in from Japan in a week or two for me.

Wow, thanks for that, I didn't even know Park Cameras existed until you said that!

See, I'd hoped that the K-X would carry over the heavy build and weatherproofing from the K200D, but it seems like the opposite

I think I'll go to Park Cameras next week and try the K-X out.

Short of one shop doing student discount and the other not, the prices are pretty much the same. Park Cameras will include a free 'gadget bag', but SRS will do the free next-day shipping.

Thanks for the advice all!

L4byr1th - you might try Currys if you just want to hold the camera. The Lion's Farm branch (a few miles West of you) has one in.

Welcome to the forum.

As an update - I was in Park on Sunday parting with some cash for a Kx with the free carry bag. No option to substitute that for something more useful, but they were very stressed which may explain it.

As a point of interest, they were offering a £100 tradein for old DSLRs, I did not take them up on that, I think my K100 is still worth slightly more than that, and the K100d super being traded by the bloke next to me looked pristine. Anyone wanting to grab a bargain should beat them at their own game and sit outside with £110 and accost all the punters going in clutching cameras!

I bought my Kx just before Christmas, the deal included Kx+ kit lens, 4Gb SD card plus Pentax's own SLR shoulder nylon bag (excellent it is as well). When I opened the box it also included a set of Energizer Lithium batteries, plus a set of Sanyo Eneloops and charger.

The price paid was £450, although the price has gone up slightly since. Also comes with a 2 year warranty.

Slight downside is that the suppliers are based in France, and the supplied manual was in French (although an English one is included in PDF format).
