We've just got back from a weekend in Herefordshire. I've still got a lot of photos to go through, but here are the first few.

C&C welcome as always please

Thanks.
I cropped it slightly to move the hub closer to the "third".
I had originally placed it in the centre, but I think this works much better.

How much sharpening have you applied ? They all seem a bit over sharpened
to me. If that's not the case, you have a resizing problem.

BTW, I like them all three, specially number two.

Martin.

Martin.

nr 2.
Pink works so surprisingly well in the surroundings.
Like the way you took it.

I agree with Martin they do look a little mover sharpened but I prefer number 3 although I'd never move anything to follow some rule only to make it look better .

Mike

PS Hold on you're a fibber, these can't be from THIS weekend it's been widdling down all weekend - well 20 miles away it has.

Can I ask what you see in them which makes you say they are over sharp?
I used "sharpen" in Paintshop Pro and some curves. I'll put the original in full size on my photobucket account with a link here for you to compare..if you don't mind

Number two is my favourite of the weekend, but I did get some strange looks, down on my knees under a tree to get the shot

Over sharpening is often recognized by a glistering kind of noise structure (don't know how else to describe it) seen in the pebbles near the wall in Nr 2, the vertical detail in the wood itself in NR 2 and the central axes of the wheel in NR 3.

Best to do is always sharpen at 100 or 200 % magnification.
About the amount of sharpening?? There are so many books and articles about it, you almost run away and seek shelter.

I think these three pictures are better of with no USM applied.
Try filter----->High Pass------>layer mode set to soft light. Opacity set to something between 50 and 75%. This technique enhances mid-tone contrast and I think your pictures here only need that.

HTH,
Martin.

Martin.

Are these the same, with the same sharpening applied? If so you have a problem with the resizing algorithms used by Photobucket.
Best regards,

Martin.

Here are the two pictures from your links, sharpened using High Pass.
Strength 4,5 px. Layer blend mode : Soft light. Opacity 50%

And I am convinced now, Photobucket does a lousy job in resizing algorithms.

It might not be photobucket, it's probably me.

I resized with PSP9 but when i resize, I don't touch any of the settings, I just change the pixel sizes to 800 on the longest size.

Time to learn a bit more about my software I think.

I've just been playing with Unsharp Mask, rather than using the preset Sharpen or Sharpen More. It does seem to be much more subtle.
