Some 400mm Tests

I have read somewhere that Sigma is a bit lazy when it comes to the lens name which is stored in the lens.
My 50-500 is reported as a SIGMA 170-500mm F5-6.3 Aspherical RF APO but it does select F4 at 50mm so the name is not linked to the data that matters (focal length and f-stop information).
I don't worry about it but it is a bit daft though.

Did a little research and theres some conflicting reports on this.
Some say it can be potentially damaging others say otherwise but im curious as to why they report correctly in Nikon and Canon but not Pentax. But as Mr. Mellow stated Sigmas answer is to return it to them or the retailer.

Will call Sigma on monday and see what they say.

Which version of Photome are people using?

The current version (which correctly identifies Sigma lenses) is version 0.79 R17 build 856. If yours is older, it might be worth updating.

Mine is also up to date.
The 120-400mm is the only Sigma lens out of the three that I have that reads wrongly in the exif data.
The older I get the faster I was.

I have contacted the author of photome regarding the wrongly reported lenses.
He asked me to mail him an image which gives the wrong info and he will try to correct it.
It all depends on the fact if Sigma bothered to put the correct info in the 50-500 in the first place.
As a sidenote we are all talking about the 50-500 as being the same lens, but there have been a couple of revisions that I know of. The current version is the 'DG' version as in optimized for digital (different coating on the back element). I don't know if the older versions report the same ID to the camera.

You could send a sample image with the wrong data to the author of the program so he can correct it.
A low quality JPEG straight out of the camera will do since converting with software will often cripple the EXIF data.

I am allso willing to bundle a number of images and send one email to the author so he can correct them all in a single run if possible. You can PM me for my email address.
