SMC Pentax 120mm f2.8

These do not seem common - in the month or so since I bought mine I haven't even found a completed auction listing. I guess they were a bit too close to the 135mm in field of view to sell especially well. There was an M version with a built in hood too, this is the original K series:

Which came to me with some paint scuffs but perfect optics for £65. It's now in the gear bag due to being faster than the M 135mm f3.5. A comparative shot of the two:

I've since sourced the correct "crinkle" finish lens cap for the K series, just makes it easier to identify at a glance (and I like the original pattern).

So, enough photos of the lens, how about a couple of tests with the lens?

I'm currently recovering from an obnoxious variety of flu, so haven't been able to get out of the house much. This gardenia is currently next to the kitchen sink:

Wonky focus (as on 1 and 3) should be sorted when my new split focussing screen turns up. Otherwise, I think it's a great lens performing in much the same way as any other K series. The colour reproduction tends towards natural shades instead of artificial vibrancy and it seems pretty sharp at all apertures. If you ever see one, buy it. A keeper!

This was intended as a portrait lens and will have fairly soft contrast at the widest apertures, but sharpening up at smaller ones.

Ahhh! That explains it. I thought it was down to me struggling to see the in focus indicator in strong daylight!

I bought the M series 120mm f2.8 in the 1980's when I went finally 'Pentax Bayonet'-- my ex-wife went off with it and I've heard she lives in Malta now !
