I don't think there is a difference. Pentax simply decided that Super-Multi-Coated was a bit of a mouthful, and shortened it to SMC.

There is a difference a big difference. If you check you will see that the Hoya Super has more layers of anti glare coatings, than the standard HMC filter. I use only the Super HMC because I can't afford then Pro ones.

Joel,
I believe the question was with respect to ASAHI PENTAX Super Multi Coated and SMC lenses.
Your comment seemed to address Hoya lenses.
George's answer is correct and helps determine the relative age of the lens.
Cheers

SMC is indeed merely an abbreviation for Super-Multi-Coated and has no other significance. Once the message had got across, the full title was no doubt thought to be a bit unwieldy.
Best regards, John

Hi,
Just the clarify the issue slightly. The Super Multi Coated lenses were updated versions of the Super Taks with the extra coating. The SMCs came along with the ES series. There is a difference with the SMCs but it is purely cosmetic. The SMCs have a rubber grip similiar to the early K lenses whereas the Super Multi lenses have the older knurled metal grip.

What are the diferences between this two series? Will they work the same?
Maybe a stupid question, but I have recently bought this camera and I am certainly stupid regarding Pentax..
Thanks,
Ernesto
