It's not free of course, but the new version of Pictures2Exe is very slick.
Some of the software I've looked at is not expensive, but the thing I'm doing is a bit of one off, and so it might not be used again.
Hi, Barrie, Photo DVD Maker v8 might be a idea and maybe free.

I've had a look Tom, I can only find a professional version of Photo DVD maker you pay for and the trail limits you to a max of 36 slides, not enough. The one in the link seems to only allow one music track.

Couldn't you do the soundtrack as a complete mix and then add it to the video track. Alternatively do small complete video/audio sections and then merge them all into one.
