If what you mean by slaves is wireless slave then you will have to look for flashes that have optical flash triggers in them. But if they do not have it you can always buy them separately, although I am not sure if that is going to make it very cheap.can anyone tell me which Pentax flash units work as slaves, preferably older types (therefore cheap so I don't have to buy flash units and triggers separately TIA
Also if you are going to trigger them wirelessly you can just about use any flash, not necessarily ones that work with Pentax only. They can then all be triggered wirelessly
Unless of course you want to use them as slaves but connect them with cables, then again you can use some adapters that will fit with the flashes and subsequently linked to your camera.
Various ways of doing it, depends exactly what you are looking for

All the P-TTL flashes can work in slave mode, provided they are used with other P-TTL flashes and a compatible camera.
Otherwise, only the AF-500FTZ has a built-in slave sensor which can be triggered by any flashgun (or by the camera's built-in flash). It is by far the best, most powerful, and most feature-laden of the non-P-TTL flashes, which is why I have three! It does not, however, have an A-mode.
The most I paid was £70.00, but you will find some people trying to sell them for much more.
The AF-400T is also a good flash, though big, and DOES have an A-mode.
A-mode means the flash has a built-in light meter, and shuts itself off when the right amount of light has been received. The most convenient A-mode flash is the AF-280T.
In fact, the best Pentax flashguns are the 280T, the 400T, the 500FTZ and the 540FGZ.
I use the little 240Z as a trigger.

I was going to use a 280T (or 240Z) as trigger on my K10, with a pair of 200S' set either side of the object I'm photographing.
I didn't want to buy photo/RF sensors as more expense and take an age to arrive from China ! (anyone in the uk do them ? cheap !!)
The 400T seems to be the only non p-ttl flash with slave (as u say), but still not cheap. How about non Pentax units, CHEAP on ebay ??

No. It is the 500 that has a slave sensor, not the 400T. The 400T is not designed to be used away from the camera. It is a hammerhead gun, with a bracket for the camera to sit on, and a short cable to connect it.
But slave triggers are very cheap. I should go that route.
