Lovely set, for me number 3 is the best.
If I was to nitpick, what lets the other two down ( to my mind ) is the out of focus leaf tips on the prominent leaf in number one. And the out of focus foreground leaf in number two.

Number 3, though: sublime!
Getting there! Thanks to you guys

And I nearly didn't look at this topic for fear of seeing Mick Hucknalls ginger mop

I disagree with Ted the first shot is the best it just needs the left hand side cropping to remove that bright leaf.

Thanks for the thoughts folks.

You are both absolutely correct and again confirm my thoughts about one of my biggest failings - not taking enough time to get a shot right "in camera". A tripod would have helped slow me up, but the light was failing, so ...... (that's my excuse, anyway).

The best I can do for now is to re-crop the first to remove the offensive leaf in PP.

Better or just different?

What were you shooting with? I've been shooting the exact same type of acer recently. I found the composition pretty tricky with leaves all over the place. The look that did it most for me was with the 50mm f1.7 wide open, which I think gives a lovely dreamy look. I won't impose them on your thread unless you'd like to see them.

Errr ....... it was a Rikenon 50mm f1.7 (but not wide open). Please feel free to post some of yours.

Much better, we have a huge Acer in the front garden, might take a lens to it tommorrow.

I tried this look on different shrubs but it seemed to work particularly well (for me) on the acer:

If we get the weather over the next day or two, I'll give it a whirl wide open and see how it goes .....

We got the weather yesterday alright!! It hammered down with rain. This morning, all the red leaves have taken their leave of the shrub and are now being blown about on the lawn. Rats!!
