Could one of you kind people tell me what the difference between a lens that's marked smc Pentax A and a smc Pentax F please.

Many thanks

Charlotte

A is manual focus and F is the first generation of autofocus. The aperture of both can be controlled from the body of a DSLR.

The other thing to remember: A series lenses will need you to dial the focal length for shake reduction when you switch the camera on. F series will be picked up automatically like the DA lenses.

And some A series lenses are clever enough to let the camera display thier focal length when you switch the camera on, so no need to "dial it in" you just press OK

Things that make me wish Pentax had kept the full K mount:

My MZ-7 displays the aperture chosen on F/FA lenses when you're using the aperture ring rather than setting it to "A". That said, my KX and MX manage to do the same thing for any suitable lens with a couple of little mirrors...

The A series lens paint had a 7.44% of cobalt naphthenate., while the F series was increased to 7.76% to facilitate a better oxidative cure.

That explains it, then. I'm sure, like me, Charlotte always wonders how much cobalt napthenate her lenses are treated with

I thought the F series lens bodies were mostly plastic anyway?

There's quite a bit of metal in the SMC-F 70-210 and you can feel it in the weight.
