Sigma Receives TIPA Awards

Thanks for sharing - the 35mm 1.4 interests me, especially since (I think) it is full frame too. Hope it comes to Pentax mount...

I didn't know TIPA awards were given to anything but third party superzooms.

I think the 35mm f1.4 is now in Pentax mount - or just about. If you look on the Sigma page under 'lens construction and outline' tab, there is a barcode referenced for a Pentax mount:

and it is in Pentax mount on amazon, although apparently shipping is 1 to 3 weeks...

It is very tempting although I have barred myself from buying any new lenses as I am moving house and need all the cash I can get

The Sigma 35/1.4 has already being lauded as the best 35mm lens you can buy for Nikon / Canon .... everybody is raving about it on the forums. So if it is now in PK mount you really should look no further for the best AF 35mm out there ! That said maybe the 31mm is better for your particular photography

I haven't used the 35mm but I bought the also superb 50/1.4 straight off the bat knowing how good the 30/1.4 is in PK mount (not for landcapes).

Sigma have some stunning lenses now (120-300/2.8, 85/1.4, 50/1.4, 35/1.4 and upcoming 135/1. so it doesn't surprise me at all to see them starting to win awards. They deserve it as they are blowing the camera manufacturers own lenses away with this latest generation. Huge kudos to the son who took over the company and is the driving force behind this.

I have heard that Sigma and Pentax fell out over this and there will not be a PK mount?? and made the deal with Nikon,Canon and some others.
thats so true and are Pentax going to miss out thats teh real question

Interesting question JC. The 35mm has sharp corners, virtually no distortion, great on CA/PF. super fast AF and is incredibly sharp (Google it - lots of tests results out for it already). Whether it renders like the 31mm is another question.

Probably the 35mm will shade the venerable 31mm in some areas but a lot may come down to personal preference .. and of course these are both full frame lenses so when used on (for example) a K5ii then you have trimmed borders and corners off already for even better performance but at the cost of width.

Your remarks about it being a full frame lens is well worth bearing in mind. On paper the 35 mm would appear to be better value for most prospective buyers, I suspect.

I shall await with trepidation Pentax user reviews...provided Sigma does produce them in P mount, of course!

Unfortunately cost comes into it as well. The 35 is already listed at about 2/3rds of the price of a 31, and it's likely that will drop a little in months to come. If it is that good, then it becomes a bit of a no brainer.
Then again, maybe that will force the price of the 31 down, if we get lucky

The Sigma is much larger than the FA31 and almost twice the weight - heavier than a DA 16-50.

I agree - I much prefer the size and weight of the 31, and it is a lens on my wish list. But a £300+ difference is significant, so the Sigma will warrant serious consideration.

Just to assist the comparison here is the FA 31mm alongside the Sigma 24mm 1.8 which is just slightly smaller than the new Sigma 35. I suspect that compact size may be the only advantage of the Pentax over the Sigma but it is a significant difference, particularly if you want to slip a fast prime into the corner of your bag when travelling. (Oh and apologies for the dodgy quality of the shot, it was taken in a hurry :shock
