Don't bump it on anything, Sigma lenses are made of easily breakable plastic. Someone must have looked at my camera, and bumped it back down on the table, which caused large chunks to break out of the lens, where the cover snaps in. This leaves the lens in a ruined condition.

I have recently bought a Sigma EX 28-70 f2.8 from Jessops. I'm lead to believe these are refurbished lenses, they look mint and come boxed with full warrenty. The impressive thing is that it only cost me £125 including next-day p&p, about half price (I have the DF version, goes for around the £240 mark). There are still a load of these lenses kicking about in Jessops stores nationwide, when I bought mine (about 3 weeks ago) there were available at over 30 branches. Prices vary between branches, so shop around.
I would suggest that Sigma are getting rid of an old range of lenses, but they're still fantastically well-made.
I only mention this in the hope that someone else will get a bargain as well.
Cheers
Matt
