Sigma 30mm F1.4

So, as some may have noticed, I'm looking to swap my 50mm f1.4 for a Sigma 30mm f1.4. While I love my FA50, it's just too zoomed up with the crop factor. I've had one person who is interested in swapping, but they just bout a f1.7 so they would have to sell that prior to this kind of swap being worthwhile for them.

Just was wondering prior to doing this swap, as google does't seem to be fourth coming, are there two flavours of Sigma 30mm? It seems some pages list the Sigma as having HSM and other don't.

Thanks all

Well you need HSM with the canon or Nikon since they don't have a screw-mount any more for the AF.
Sony and Pentax don't have HSM.

So actually you can say there are 6 flavours, Canon, Pentax, Nikon, Sony, FourThirds and Sigma.

It does not have HSM in either Pentax or Sony mounts. Sigma reverse engineer their mounts so I guess they haven't cracked the Pentax or Sony algorythms yet.

RR some Sigma lenses for Pentax do have HSM, don't know if that's very recent or not?

Ahhh, true Stefan. I even had a Sigma 70-200mm with HSM on my K20d

I wonder what the limitation is then, as the 30mm isn't that old.

See, I thought they didn't have HSM, but:

http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?pName=sigma-30mm-f14-ex-dc-...
http://www.amazon.com/Sigma-Pentax-Samsung-Digital-Cameras/dp/B000FG6CME

list HSM as the model type.

So I take it there is only the one type of 30mm f1.4?

HSM in Canon EF mount is a mixed blessing - as Sigma reputedly won't pay to licence the AF technology from Canon, so they engineer their own solution to enable the lenses to work on current Canon EOS bodies. A problem arises when Canon bring out new bodies and the Sigma lenses cease to work properly.

Next time you're out and see Canon's very, very few are equipped with Sigma lenses...

Not so much of a problem on Pentax, Oly or Nikon, not sure about Sony/Minolta though. Apparently Tokina and Tamron do pay a licence to Canon.

I think it's because the Canon mount is entirely electrically controled, making it more complex to reverse engineer than the partially mechanical Pentax, Nikon and Sony ones.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

Back to this question ... seems a camera shop in Canada lists both HSM and regular versions of the Sigma 30mm F1.4 with the HSM having a price premium. However the sigma Canada website only lists the non-HSM

Henrys has the 50mm as an HSM, not the 30mm.
