I have the EX DG non HSM. I've used it on both crop and full frame bodies and been happy with either combination.

I have had the non HSM EX version, I have the HSM version for sale as I purchased the Pentax lens.
The HSM is definately sharper (not just saying that as mine is up for sale), if you want something in the older lenses price bracket though look for a Sigma 24-60mm f/2.8 which is sharper than the 24-70mm.

Thanks both. I've got a wedding coming up and I'm okay for telephoto but my only standard lens for general photography is the Pentax HD 28-105mm which is great but a slow aperture so not great for low light, non flash images.
Debating either doing a deal for the older version that SRS have for sale or, sell it on and maybe look at Mike's lens.
If the Pentax 24-70mm came down a few hundred I'd part chop the 28-105mm in for one of them but I can't see that happening anytime soon!

I had the EX DF 28-70mm f/2.8 for a while and was not at all impressed. Huge and very heavy it was de-centred and produced poor images. After a short time it spontaneously (no knocks, no drops, just sitting in the cupboard) developed very stiff focusing under 3m, too stiff for any focus motor to shift it.
Not all will be like that of course but Sigma build quality and quality control was not always at the standard it is today.

If you are not too worried about 4mm then why not an FA*?

I've read conflicting reports that the original EX is sharper than the newer DG EX HSM version.
Anyone have any experience of either and happy to tell me their findings?
Thanks.
