Sigma 105 Pentax Question

Posted 30/06/2013 - 22:58 Link
Hi guys

A friend is selling the Sigma 105mm EX macro lens BUT its not the OS version.

Does this really matter since Pentax bodies have SR built in anyways?

Its considerably cheaper than the OS version. anyone got any experience with these lenses?

The in body SR is fine, you can't use in-lens SR at the same time, so it makes no difference.

I've been using the 105mm Macro for the last 4 years and it's a great lens. Use it manual focus nearly all the time as well for better control of the focus point. Nice and sharp too!

Thanks guys for the responses. Sorry to be a bore and go over this again but its the OLDER lens and NOT the OS?

Im afraid of buying something inferior?

The onboard Pentax SR is great and it will probably be mounted on a tripod anyways most of the time.

I heard somewhere that this version was noisy?

Thanks for the support and help

The lens is fantastic, dont worry about OS as SR works just fine. I have the 50mm version and loved it so much I got the big brother
One day you'll find, 10yrs have got behind you.

Hi Alistair, DO NOT worry about this lens being inferior in any way - it is a superb lump of glass. You don't need the OS version for a focal length of 105mm! When you say it's noisy, it is a screw drive lens so will not be as quiet as a SDM lens, but it is less noisy than some of the Pentax screw drives, e.g. the 16-45 and the 55-300.

My Sigma 105 macro is one of my most used lenses and I absolutely love it. The IQ is superb, the bokeh is superb, the colour rendition is superb. The only thing that could be improved is the AF speed, but this is a common trait with Macro lenses as they tend to have a longer focus throw.

I use mine for macro, for weddings and for general street / walkabout use - it is great in this mode for isolating faces and people from a background. I almost always use it at F2.8 (except when shooting macro) and there is no noticeable loss of IQ when used wide open.

Highly recommended by me.

David

Yes its quite noisy, but this is far outweighed by its sharpness and versatility. My most used lens..
