Sigma - Why so few Pentax lenses - Answer

I am left unsure if the lack of Pentax lenses on offer from Sigma is due to lower Pentax sales or due to the specific requirements of the K mount.
I just hope that the 18mm to 35mm Art lens is released this year..

It's due to cost. They're not using mechanical aperture links for other mounts so they have to manufacture parts specifically for Pentax.
I'm not familiar with it, but I'd imagine that the Nikon F mount would also use a mechanical link, due to it's age.

Do other lenses employ a solenoid to alter the aperture?

mechanical on the older bodies, but purely electrical on the cheaper bodies - AFAIK D3*00 and D5*00 won't work with older lenses whatever the brand.

Ahhhhh, yes, that explains it, thx for the info. I've actually come up against this quite a lot. I'm quite happy to pay to have a MPE65 converted to Pentax mount (yes I get the registration distance issue) but the problem is that lens has a motor inside it that drives aperture, and Pentax can't talk to that. Bit of a bummer.

The new nikon lenses no longer have an aperture ring so must now be electronic..

No, they do still have a mechanism very similar to Pentax. I imagine that it is really down to economy of scale for Sigma, I think the nikon mechanism is on the opposite side to Pentax, if so, that would create complexity. Would we accept more Sigmas in K mount if they were 'upside down'? Hardly seems to matter if there is no distance scale on the lens.

I always thought the Sigma's own mount was actually based on the K-mount but with certain differences. Surely it would not be as difficult. I could be wrong in this aspect.
Having said that, Sigma do produce K-mount lenses with both screw-drive and HSM drive, so why don't they say for certain lenses, "We will make a K-mount version, but to special order only". That I would not mind a bit.
