Shutter release cable???

I have a K5 and a cheap non-Pentax wireless remote. Can anyone explain to me why would I need a cable shutter release like this ( is this X- compatible with canon?)

I am planning to some long exposure shots

For long exposures I have found a wired release the handiest, especially for night. Quite simply because it is wired, I can't misplace it in the dark or fail to remember which pocket the IR remote is in.

Recently picked up an el cheapo one for my son link and quite frankly it is every bit as good as my more expensive one.

I use this for a K10D, but pretty sure it is the same for the K5. It is also compatible with many (all?) canons.

I've just bought one to use with my K-5. I'm pretty sure that it will be OK as I know that the official Pentax one works with both the K-7 and Canon's EOS 400. I can't see there being a problem as Pentax list the same part number for both the K-7 and the K-5. (Famous last words!)

Just an update. The cable remote release that Neville (moose) linked to arrived today. It works fine with the K-5 and for £2.58 delivered would seem to be good value.

BTW - it works with an EOS 400 and the box is actually marked 'EOS' rather than Pentax

It is one of those rare occasions, where 'too good to be true' is not the case.

does a shutter release cable have any advantage over a shutter remote?

For me they are two different things. A remote is for when you are standing away from the camera and a cable is for when the camera is on a tripod and you don't want to risk shaking it by physically pressing the button.

TBH, it's a relic of the past but I do, for whatever reason, like using them in that way.

I only use the IR remote. On the K10D it was not any good for long exposures, however with settings on the K7 for one press to open shutter and one press for closing it again.

Also, on a tripod, there is the 2 second mirror lock up on IR remote, so a cable release has never been a part of my DSLR kit.

Only problem I have ever had was when I'm at the side of the camera and the IR receive on the front or back of the camera cannot 'see' the IR Remote.
