shutter cable release

Been into photography for about 4 years and using digital but decided I needed to go back to film to learn about taking thoughtfully composed pictures instead of just point shoot and delete the rubbish.
I have just bought a Pentax P30T and would like to know if anybody knows where I might be able to find a remote shutter release, had a look on ebay but no luck.

AFAIK any standard cable release should fit? Or you can use the self timer.

I have a standard cable release that normally fits in the shutter button but I need one to screw in the camera body next to the lens mount and its a different thread size. thanks anyway

The P30T needs "Cable Switch A" and was the first range of bodies not to have a standard screw-in remote release. Finding one of those could be tricky so if you really need a remote then SRB sell these: link.

Ah - sorry! I hadn't tried putting a cable release on mine so assumed it was a standard size socket.

According to the manual, the P30t accepts either a Cable Switch A or a Cable Release 50, which looks to be the standard size. The socket seems to have a normal thread but I can't find my mechanical release to check it out. I have a dim recollection of using a standard release with this camera to do some macro photography several years ago.

Shooting both digital (K10D) and film, (LX, MX, ME Super, Retina IIIc) I've always wondered why we couldn't have the fine old Compur style cable release on digital cameras? If, as I suspect, the shutter button is little more than a switch on my K10, why couldn't a Compur cable release press that switch? Please, no Leica style cable releases! The little trim ring which had to be unscrewed from the shutter button is too easily lost!

Granted, it is really nice to be able to release the shutter from many feet away, but the old style cable releases never suffered from dead button cells!

Inquiring minds want to know....

Some digital cameras have had conventional cable release sockets, but my guess is that it's easier and cheaper to install an electronic version.

Don't forget that old style releases can cause a lot of damage if used over-enthusiastically. Some of the plungers are far too long to be safe.

Car boot sales and the bargain bin of old style camera shops are likely places to pick up a cable release. Although i'm sure if you posted an ad in the classifieds here, someone would help you out.

I was going to offer you my spare, but I threw it in with an MG body I sold recently.

IIRC the ebay shop "Not Just Cameras" had an air release for sale when I last looked - same idea but using a rubber bulb connected to a length of hose with the air pressure generated by squeezing the bulb triggering the shutter.

Worth keeping an eye on that shop anyway, they often have interesting stuff, prices are fair, and they're good to deal with. I would not be surprised if they have a few cable releases too.
