Very nice shot. I think it would look better to my eyes if the colour saturation was turned down a bit, but impressive.

Thanks all, there was no playing with the colour saturation,a tad of sharpening was all it got.

Very good - that backlighting was clearly a technical challenge, so the fill-flash was absolutely the way to go - it has revealed the colours beautfully. I also like the slight movement at the wingtips which adds some drama.
Could you tell us a bit more about the flash? Was it the pop-up or a gun, and was it at the program P-TTL setting or had you set the exposure manually?

A really fantastic shot, in difficult conditions, I am impressed! The colours are very bright but look natural to me, the foliage in the background is definitely not over-saturated.

Thanks Nigel, as stated I was only using the Tamron 90 and was only about 1 meter from this bird, I had the Pentax ring flash on board (was bug hunting)this was set on -1.Very good - that backlighting was clearly a technical challenge, so the fill-flash was absolutely the way to go - it has revealed the colours beautfully. Shot was taken at f5.6 , ISO 200,1/180,
When a flock of 20 or so feed they can be quite quarrelsome, hence the pose.
