Sharpening HDR images

I am having a bit of trouble sharpening HDR images. They seem to get artifacts with any shrpening at all. Someone told me to sharpen the images before making an HDR, by sharpening each image by the factor of pictures, eg if using five shots sharpen each image by a fifth of the total that I would use on one pic. This does not seem to work that well either. Am I doing something wrong? Any advice appreciated.

what sharpening method, how much, which software are you using?

I'd personally go for the "sharpen the RAW" slightly (USM @ 0.2 or so) and all consistent. The alternative would be to smart-sharpen (i.e. layer masking and only sharpening the Luminosity) the end result...why are they not sharp to start with?

I have been using unsharp mask in photoshop. I sharpen all my pics after developing. I will try smart sharpen, never used it before.

A little trick i sometimes use is duplicate the layer and sharpen that and duplicate the original layer and place it over the sharpened one and set the blending option to darken.
It will then darken the halos to an extend and you can control the amount it does that.
