Sharpening challenge

It isn't, it's in the sun, same as the moon, so the strongest shadow would be cast towards (ish) the moon and a secondary one from the reflect light of the moon. Try it, it's easy to see in photoshop
The ships have artificial gravity, so it makes sense to line up the gravity, and the ships will be designed to look the 'right way up' in relation to their gravity, because that's what we would want if we were buying one

OK. If I went to buy a car and it wasn't the right way up I probably wouldn't buy it. So that makes sense.

But why does the Enterprise bank when it turns? A plane has to bank when it turns (or rather it turns when it's banked unless the rudder is crossed) because of the differential air pressure across the wings.

But the Enterprise is in space so a difference in power between the two engines would cause it to turn without changing the perpendicular axis.

Or is this some clever tool to make it look 'cool'?

I had a go with the file but didn't achieve any more than the OP did. You, however, have brought out quite a lot more detail from the file. You gave a brief synopsis of what you did but could you elaborate further and advise what software you used to achieve it. Thanks.

I tried it in LR4 but couldn't get close to DrO's image quality.

this is unbelievable good - I guess, I won't touch any bitmap processor for at least two weeks to recover from the shock how bad I am...

It's even bigger than 100percent! I've tried again, using 3 layers (taking the best of each) and high pass filters, and a touch of normal sharpening, but it's still messy. Better than my first attempt, but still no good

Possibly not quite as amazing as you might think... from someone who has taken some superb images of the moon.

Well after the hassle of trying to do the impossible and given there was a good full moon out tonight I took one or twenty myself with the Sigma 150-500 plus 2x Vivitar converter.




All the images I took tonight had that white spot to the left just below the centre. Can't say I've noticed that before - have I spotted something new?

I can't believe I fell for that. Ha! I so wanted to believe there was that much detail in my image and that that sort of resurrection was possible LOL. Damn..
Still, it did force me to redouble my efforts and I learnt a little more.
Here's my latest attempt at a silk purse from a sow's ear. (I think I've reached hessian purse so far )

I know there's the bright right-hand rim - it's a sharpening artefact, but I don't have time to do much more than this today.

I like yours Chris, it has a natural, if noisy appearance. I think mine looks a little posterised in comparison, but the rings and splats that look like GIF compression (for want of a better analogy) are in fact shallow craters. so I'm reasonably pleased.
Now... where can I find a 500mm?
Are there any mirror lenses that are any good? Or should I buy a telescope?

edit: BTW, mine looks like I applied noise reduction, but I don't think I did (even inadvertently in the raw file), I think it was the fairly broad high-pass filter that did that.

Incidentally, I'd be quite interested to understand why the progressive lessening in apparent sharpness from left to right in DrO's image.

I know the lighting is more direct on that side, and detail less easy to see due to the lack of shadows, but to my eye it appears different from that.

I wanted to have a go at the challenge but when I click on the link I seem to end up having to purchase Quicktime 7 Pro? I'm I being a ding dong and missing something obvious?
