Having read John's article on sharpening using a mono layer, thought I'd have a go in PSE9.

Result is this...

I think the level of detail revealed is astonishing.

C&C welcome.

Thanks, Gareth & Gwyn.

In PSE9:
Duplicate layer.
Convert layer to mono.
Unsharp.
Blend "Overlay"
Filter/Other/High Pass. (Recommended settings)
Merge layers.
Adjust light/Contrast.
(Also refer to Axel's post in Cameraboy's "Singapore botanical gardens" post of 29.12.10)

It's great here, isn't it!!

O.K., it's not PSE9's Mode list.
But whatever, this seems to work!

Roger.

I just tried it using a not very good photo to play around with.
Amazing results! Now a very sharp, not very good photo.

Will try it on a better photo later and will post here if it is any good .

Here is the original image with LR3 sharpening set to 75 (quite a bit higher than I would normally use!)

The one above is probably slightly oversharpened compared to the coker's sharpened version. Reducing the LR3 sharpening to 50 looks closer:

Coker, your sharpened one is slightly oversharpened, see jaggies on slants.
Here my very quick try (with my usuall, well a bit more than my usual sharpening, although I have feeling I could do it even more with this pic) using your source picture attached here.

I'm still not sure what subjects would benefit from this method as opposed to regular USM sharpening?

I generally sharpen with USM as a last step, after a slight sharpen in LR3 and then resizing for the web.
Usually 0.3 pixels at 300 percent or something like that: My Version

'Focus Magic' is great too, it actually literally sharpens your image, as opposed to applying contrast adjustments which is how USM works. It cures slight motion blur too!

Thanks, Gwyn, Algi & Tim.
And Piotro & Will!

Thus proving...
there's always more than one way of skinning a cat!

For anyone with (only) PSE9, JR's method looks as good as...

And on an A4 print, the "slanties" look O.K.!

Someone recently posted a panorama and another nightime shot with
tripod blur that Focus Magic could probably correct quite well
