Shake Reduction lens settings..

Is there a concensus as to what (in camera) lens setting to choose for SR when mounting an A lens with zoom. Do you have to change the setting to suit the zoom setting or is there an accepted median/average that will work.?

In theory you would set the focal length in use, but in practice that could be really inconvenient.

I'd be inclined to set an average and see how it went, or not bother to use SR at all.
Best regards, John

Thank you John, I think you're right and that trial and error will possibly teach me more than anything.. Regards, Alan.

An incorrect SR length setting can play havoc if it is way off. I agree with the average theory for a fairly short focal range, but for medium to longer ranges then I'd say you should stop and reset it each time you change the zoom significantly. Maybe jumps in about 20mm steps would be a good start point?

I was recording video the other day with my 28mm prime, and it looked slightly wobbly - unusual because its always very stable. I then realised I had not changed the setting after using my zoom earlier, and the SR length was on 80mm. This really had a bad effect.

The Pentax/Ricoh U.S. website recommends using the middle focal length when using a manual zoom lens.

"Use the rear e-dial to select a focal length which is closest to the focal length of the lens you are using. If you are using a zoom lens, choose a focal length close to the midpoint of the zoom range of the camera."

Milton

This may be the official advice, but it didn't work very well for me. When my 17-70 DA went faulty, it told the camera the mid-range setting no matter what the zoom was set to. The SR was only effective when the zoom was set to near that point. Near either extreme, whilst it probably reduced some shake, it didn't do a very good job of it

Strange ... I'm sure on my K7 its the 4-way controller that selects the focal length to input, not the e-dial ???

Thaks to all. I think switching the SR off will be my best option. As I'm always sitting when I take photos, (wheelchair bound), and I use a shoulder harness when I'n out, if I breath properly, I can get as low as 1/10th sec before any blurring appears. I guess that makes me lucky in that I am shooting from a pretty stable base to start with.. lol.
