SFX advice

I bought a SFX off e-bay some months ago and tried to set it up last night for use this weekend. I don't have an AF lens for it so was using a Sigma KA I have. The film won't load despite the motor engaging, the cogs move about 3mm. The CENTIC display won't show mode selection unless the back is open and no information is displayed through the viewfinder. No battery warning shows in the CENTIC, but could the problem be due to low battery charge? All suggestions gratefully received

I would always try new or freshly charged batteries first. So many cameras seem to be really picky about the correct voltage and amperage being available. But, do make sure that the contacts are really clean - any corrosion down in the bottom of the battery chamber can usually be removed with a little white vinegar on a cotton bud, and dried off the same way.
I have just had to do this on an Oly OM10 (that will teach me to leave the batteries in while not in use :blush.
