Setting myself a challenge

Wifey and I are off to Valencia city for a few days and I'm going minimalist, photographically speaking.

I'm taking K-5II + DA12-24mm + spare battery + spare SDHC card, all tucked up in a Lowepro Nova 1 AW shoulder bag, that's it.

Time will tell what image opportunities might arise.

Looking at the weather forecast for the next few days, I might have to change my choice of lens to a weatherproof one , DA*16-50mm springs to mind.

It's a good challenge - I am forever sneaking an extra lens in my bag when I head out, so I admire your will power!

Might be a challenge too far. On Friday we plan to be here.

The DA12-24mm might be pushed to its limits I think, but that's what I have decided to take as my one lens on this trip.

Of course that will be a very good excuse to make several visits and take a different lens each time.

As it turned out, I think the DA12-24mm was the perfect choice. We had no rain worth mentioning so weather protection was not an issue and the focal length range of 12 - 24mm seemed perfect for cityscapes.

I do of course have quite a few images and they'll take a few days to work through but I'll post a sample tomorrow.

If any of you plans a trip to Valencia city, if you see nothing else, you must go to the Ciudad de las Artes Y Ciencias (City of arts and sciences), and especially the Oceanogràfic exhibition.

Unfortunately for us, two of the exhibition halls, including the Science Museum were closed due to Mercedes Benz having occupied them for the launch of their 2013 collection of vehicles. Truth is, we would not have had time to visit them anyway because our visit to Oceanogràfic took up most of our time. The only other hall we visited was the iMax cinema in the Hemisfèric where we watched a 1 hour film about the navigation of the Nile from its source to the sea. No photography was allowed in there though, so I have only images of the building and some of the interior framework.

Images will follow in a day or two . . . including some video from the K-5II + DA12-24mm combo.

Well here they are, the images from my challenge, at long last, or at least, part one. I can't understand why it's taken me so long to get around to editing these, but finally, I have.

Part two will follow very shortly . . . maybe.

This first set are mostly architectural record shots of the buildings comprising the City of Arts and Sciences, all built in a dried up river bed.

Part two will be almost exclusively from the Oceanographic aquarium with the limitations that come with shooting in low light through almost 2 inches of glass and no flash allowed.

All images shot with a gripped Pentax K-5 II + Pentax smc DA 12-24mm 1:4 lens . . . and nothing else.

Thanks Stan. #2 was taken later in the day when the clouds had moved in to give the sky some character.

#5 was taken hand held but with the camera resting on some railings on the top floor of the hotel we were staying in.

I'm quite into going out and using just one lens at the moment (FA35 for me) but I carry the K5 and usually 4/5 lenses with me all the time...
My back has started to ache all the time as well...

So today I picked up a second-hand bag for £4 that will only fit the K5 with one small lens attached (fits 18-55WR with hood reversed - just) and a spare battery and filters... I'm going to at least try the minimalist approach and see how I do, reserving my main bag for trips and pre-planned stuff.
