Does anybody know where I can get a date for Pentax serial numbers? Are they like soviet items, where the year is the starting digits? Or is there a register site out there somewhere?

As far as I know no such database exists unfortunately. There was a discussion about MX serial numbers on Photo.net a while ago but nothing was decided upon apart from the fact that Pentax serial numbers are indecipherable! I think it's safe to say that the first two digits don't represent a year, however, others in the chain may.

If you're happy to settle for approximate years of manufacture then Bojidar's site is the Bible of all things K-mount.

OK so a pentax body can only be aged approximately. I've visited Bojidar's site on several occasions and find it a first class reference for most things Pentax. I was just curious about the serial on my MX.
