I think this must be a record for this item. I bought mine a few years ago for about £70.00, and thought I had overpaid.

The last listed UK price was 119.99.

Are they any good? Not so much the AF adapter aspect, which would be fun to have, but optically.

I have a couple of non-Pentax TCs (one's a Takumar and the other one's Jessops branded), and I haven't been all that impressed with them.

Typically, for instance, I find that if I take a picture of a chimney, say, 100 yards away, with the 5.6 A 400, and then stick the TC on, I don't see any more actual detail with the 400x2 than the 400 on its own, enlarged.

It seems to me that the doubler loses in resolving power what it gains in image size.

Does this sound plausible? Or should I suspect my technique? (I mean, I always suspect my technique anyway, but I am quite careful).

It sounds very plausible.

The best converters are useful and cause little degradation, but the worst are truly awful.

I found a Pentax T6-2X on Ebay recently, and as it fell into the category of "bargain you can't afford to pass up" I grabbed it.

When I eventually get my K10D repaired I'll tell you what it's like.

The 1.7 is well-regarded optically (like other Pentax T/Cs), but the AF doesn't work that well on long lenses with small maximum apertures unless it's a very bright day.

Can anyone enlighten me how this little device works?

Is there a moving device within the TC that changes the plane of focus? I can't see how the TC changes the manual focus lens because there are no mechanical linkages to move the focusing ring.....

You are correct. It only works within a limited range, however. You need to have approximate focus on the main lens.

You could have knocked me down with a feather!

IMHO the optical quality of the AF Adapter is superb.

All the best!

Actually I have the 1.7x AF converter that doesn't get nearly enough use...

If anyone wants to buy it at anywhere near that price, they are more than welcome
Might eBay it in a few weeks.... to help fund a few things

Wow....I got a mint one years back for $20.00 canadian.
Mine gets used regularly with my 50 1.4 and my 85 soft 2.2. Stunning images when used with the 2.2...I'm bad at math, but 85mm, times 1.7 af converter, times the 1.5 crop on digital equalls lot's of happy female portrait subjects!
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Took the thoughts right out of my head, although I did use mine last week (the AF Adaptor, not my head ). If you're going to ebay yours, let me know and I'll make sure I don't put mine on at the same time.

I sold a K T6-2x on ebay recently and was quite disappointed when a certain johnriley1uk was outbid at the last minute.

Not the same thing - the 1.7x AF Convertor is a 1.7x teleconvertor that has movable elements, so it gives autofocus when used with manual focus lenses.

The two you mentioned are for use with autofocus lenses, but will not make manual lenses autofocus.

Pentax brought out the 1.7x convertor when they first brought out AF cameras, so that AF could be used with the vast number of manual lenses already in use.

The MC7 and MC4 designations refer (I believe) to the number of elements used to make the convertor lens - the more lenses the better (within reason).

Funnily enough, so was I.

That'll teach me to pay attention...
