Second bash at Portraits

Far from it for me to critique but I dont like them :-s The lighting is very harsh from the side causing a nasty shaddow accross her eye from her nose which kind of recks it for me :-s
Maby if her head was tilted the other way? I dont know? Or maby reduce the intensity of the flash might shade more of the right side of her face?
Also Big shaddow behind her on the second shot was that intentional or not?
Shes a nice model flatter her abit
The one of the little girl though I think is great

You don't have to start with "far from me to critique" - as that is what this is about. I'm really struggling to click with portraits and feedback like this is very welcome.

There's no reason why harsh lighting can't be used for portraits, it all depends on the effect that you want.
I think here it's the pose and composition that needs working on in particular and the only way to do this is to keep on shooting lots of images. Photographing people is not easy, but it does improve as we go.
I'm not sure that the lighting and background gel together and I'd be very tempted to use a black background with this sort of lighting. It will be low key, very dark and heavy, but also very dramatic and this might suit her style.
even on a slow week, I set up different lighting and shoot a few practice shots.... even the ones I wouldn't consider "Pro" are valuable practice... here's one where the lighting has some promise, but I just grabbed my subject and tossed him in there, with no effort to stylize his cloths and hair or posing.
