That's exactly how the British summers has been this year, dark skies and turbulent seas. You really captured the movement here, seems a bit dark to me though.

Exactly right - a very dark stormy sky with just a small break in it allowing the sun through.royd63uk wrote:

Handheld using the DA* 300 - not particularly easy, given the strength of the wind

I guess I'll be the lone detractor here and say that this isn't one of my fave ocean shots. The lighting doesn't bother me - in fact it makes it look moonlit, if not for the wisp of cloud visible. It's the lack of context. There's nothing there that gives you a true feel for the power and immensity that is surely present. Yes, it's a roiling sea, but it fills so much of the frame that it loses something. There's a snip of a boat, but I feel that more of the boat would help with context. Or a shoreline, or more of that mountain in the background, or..... just something to relate it to.

The light is good, the contrast with the sky is good. It has hints of interest - the boat, the mountainous shore.
But to me it still seems too much like a crop from something greater.

Thank you all for your comments.
The boat is the top half of a navigation mark and the mountain is the eastern end of the Isle of Wight (approximately 6-7 miles away).
I prefer this image to any of the others that I took with 'objects of interest' in them. An example of one of those images is under the heading of 'What might have been' in Your Photos.
