In order to fine tune my earlier post, I'm posting this to try to identify the spread of SDM issues by lens model.

Please tick the appropriate box and please can you post how old the lens was when it failed, or any other relevant information.

It is for SDM AF lens failures only, i.e. the SDM ceases to function completely. Hunting, AF speed, and optical issues are separate to this poll.

I thank you for your indulgence and for your participation.
Best regards
Richard Day

I don't see the point in this, you will get a number but nothing more since it is not a percentage so it won't tell you which lens has the most SDM problems.

BTW what's the point in this anyway?

16-50mm s/n 9028666 so probably about 10-12mths old. It was a used item so I do not know previous history. SDM just stopped working and nothing I did would bring it back to life.

supprised that you've left DA*200 and DA*300 off of the list.

Will not the results will be skewed in favour of failures?
Someone with one SDM lens and one failure they will vote once but someone with multipul SDM lenses (e.g. me) will only be able to vote once when to get a true perspective of failures that person should be able to vote once for each lens.

None of my 6 SDM lenses have had SDM failures, my first 2 SDM lenses are now 2 years old. So please add 5 more votes to your NO counter on my other lenses behalf
Good luck

If we had some idea of what Richard is trying to find out then we might be able to help better. These polls are a bit dubious as research IMHO.

Ooop's sorry about the 200 & 300, I plain forgot!

Problem is I can't update the poll section.

The results may be skewed somewhat, but I did ask those with multiple lenses to post their details. So can I ask those with any failures of DA*200 or 300's to tick the more than one box and detail which lens in a separate post as well.

Unfortunately the poll system can only handle a single selection to a single question, so it's very hard to garner solid data.
Best regards

I'm trying to identify if the few failures are lens specific and time related and also to discover if the failure rate is now much lower than earlier production examples.

Just wanting to obtain a better, truer picture of events, rather than any emotive reactions.

As an owner of mainly SDM lenses, I find the results interesting and also encouraging as it does seem (at this early stage) that current lenses are much less liable than the first production units (early adopters beware! :lol

My first DA*16-50, s/no 9011157, was faulty from new. It was delivered on 14/08/2007 and replaced by the supplier a couple of months later.

But to get a real figure you need to have an amount of lenses sold and the amount of lenses failed to get a true number.

For the DA*55 for example one 2 or 3 users on this forum have one, so if the fail rate will let's say be 10% how big would the change be one of the three would fail?

As for the 16-50 and the 50-135, problable the most used SDM lenses on this forum, there is a higher number of them and most of them also are older.

So all in all the figures you get now doesn't say a thing since you can not put them in perspective

Edit:
for example.
Of the 2 failed 16-50 how many good ones do you have of the members voted in this poll?
So what does those 2 failed lenses say?

You should do a poll per lens to get an at least usable figure. Since you then have failed lenses relative to working ones.
