Screw Mount

Have been looking at buying a Macro lens but funds are a bit tight at the moment.
Managed to bag a Vivitar 90mm 2/8 macro lens (actual lens pictured) on Ebay for what I think is a reasonable price to have a play with. From what I have read it is a true 1:1 Macro.

It is M42 screw mount and comes with a pentax branded adapter, case and filter but do I basically use it the same as in the Sigma post ?

Thanks.

No, that thread was about a K lens where the body can't read the aperture info but it can stop the lens down. With M42 lenses the body can't stop the aperture down itself.

You'll have to use Av metering (not M) and use the aperture ring on the lens. The aperture will actually stop down as you turn the ring (unless there is an A/M switch on the lens) so you'll want to open it up to compose and then close it down to meter/shoot.

It's a bit of extra faff, but the good news is that you'll actually get accurate metering, unlike K/M lenses.

if you're using it with a K10D, I wouldn't count on that. It's still stop down metering so you'll still get the same problems you would have had, it's just that you have to do the stopping down yourself.

I had one of these macros for a while in K mount, it was a decent performer. I only got rid of it because I got hold of a Tamron 90mm with a matched teleconverter which is slightly better and more compact, although only 1:2 natively.

The vivitar should be a decent introduction to macro anyway.
you don't have to be mad to post here

but it does help

I presume I can mount this on the K10D ok?
I just thought for the money it was worth looking at, if no good I will probably get my money back on Ebay.

I can't see if it is a K lens. Not sure you will be able to mount it.

You need to be careful with Ricoh mount lenses as although the mount is basically the same they sometimes have a locking pin which can lead to them getting permanently stuck on the camera. This can be expensive to fix!

Thanks, I have been doing some reading up on that and it seems fairly simple to remove the pin.
Saying that, everything is simple when you have done it once or twice, maybe not the first time
