Santa did not bring me my wants.. So!! If the turkey has not upset the digestive systems and the wine befuddled your brains Please can you sages offer me advice. I am after a teleconverter, preferably a 1.4. The choice is between a Pentax 1.4-s or a new other make 1.4. Will the Pentax 1.4S fit behind all my Pentax lens. ie. 50-200D. 18-35D 35-105F and several 35mm lens. Would I be better with the 1.4 other make. My choice is the Pentax, if I can find one but I am not sure how this will work with my lens. regards Ronald.

Checkout this manual first.

I think I understand what the manual is telling me but my dotage leaves me uncertain. Do I understand that the 1.4 short is suitable for lens less than 300mm and would therefore suit my purpose? regards Ronald.

The manual lists the lenses that are unsuitable for use with the 1.4X-S and 1.4X-L teleconverters. I haven't digested it thouroughly but there are some wide angle lenses that are also unsuitable for use with this T/C.

My recommendation is to look out for a SMC Pentax-F 1.7X AF teleconverter. It has the advantage of turning MF lenses into AF. The image quality is exceptionally good too.

Thanks again, Peter. I have not come up against the 1.7 or, it has not registered. If it is the right move then it is worth waiting for. I mostly use the lens mentioned plus my 100mm macro. regards Ronald.

They do come up on ebay occasionally. Expect to pay anything from £180.00 upwards for a decent one.

I've chased all afternoon for details of the 1.7. I'm told in some forums that they cost an arm and two legs. I'm disabled with only a leg and a half...so I guess that's not on. I am told that they are best for long prime lens and then only at their short end. I am beginning to wonder if I am going down the right route. I have a prime 200mm lens plus I have a 50-200mm zoom that I would like to extend their range, plus a 100mm macro that is only one to two ratio. I was hoping the extender would up this to one to one. Maybe a set of extension tubes and a 100mm =300mm zoom is what I need to aim for. Ronald.

I have just bought a 1.7x AF converter from a gentleman on this blog!...pristine condition, haven't managed a day out with it yet but a quick fiddle with it indoors shows great potential.......cant wait to give it a good run out!............Ken

Ken,
I read somewhere that there could be a problem of the rear element of the lens coming in contact with the front element of the converter if the rear element of the lens projects beyond the mounting flange.I am not trying to put a damper on your new purchase but I checked mine as soon as I read about the problem.I have used mine with the 50mm f1.7 F & FA and Tamron 90mm & 135 mm f2.5s......John

Hi Ken and Doik. I came up against many warnings about the 1.7 in various forums that I was left unsure exactly how this converter would work with my lens. It's an expensive mistake if they do not work. My macro and my 200mm prime would not present a problem but my zooms certainly would potentially cause an issue. I would be grateful for anything you can guide me on from your experience. Ronald.
