Harsh, uncomfortable viewing, almost newsprint like. I guess that's the point? I can't say I like them, but I guess that's the point too. In which case they deliver the intended message?

I'm not sure either, but #3 works best for me.

Interesting!
Number 2 for me, good composition and for me it retains enough of its photographic quality. The dithered look in 1 and 3 is too much like a fax for me! (Having said that I prefer 3 to 1)
