Samsung Lenses

Can anyone kindly tell me whether a K5 will make its sophisticated adjustmenst to JPEG images taken with near identical Samsung 50-200 and 16-45 lenses.

Are you referring to the lens distortion and abberration corrections? AFAIK if the lens is 'DA equivilent' then you should get auto corrections when the item is activated on the camera (control panel).

In PDCU on the lens distortion corrections tab the 'auto' items will be active and the focal length will be pre set on the slider also.

All other 'JPEG adjustments' (such as custom image parameter, shadow / highlight corrections, white balance fine tuning, sharpness etc etc) are available on the camera for any lens.

I believe so as the Samsung's were virtually a re-badging exercise. The only difference I've heard comment on is the coatings. I did have a Samsung 12-24 and it worked fine on K200/K20. I can't remember if I had the K5 at the same time.

Don't know I'm afraid Andrew. I know Lightroom doesn't automatically detect my Samsung equivalent of the DA12-24. Doesn't bother me, because I just manually select it

I've been doing some RAW conversions to TIFF on my K7 recently, so I've been using all the in camera parameters, including the lens corrections, and my only concern is with the distortion correction, which always seems to crop into the shot a bit too much. Have to be careful to allow a bit extra in the framing if planning on using this function.

Yes, that's what I was wondering about. It looks like a very useful feature to have.

Works with the Samsung 18-55mm and 50-200mm on the K-30 so should be ok on the K5 I'd guess

TBH, with these modern lenses at the more average focal lengths, the distortions are not very apparent. You may find its not worth having them activated. They will slow down the rendering of the JPEG preview on the LCD screen when you're shooting, which can be annoying if you're working quickly and checking the LCD preview for feedback.

If you get it working try a few test shots with it on and off and have a close look - at 16mm you may see some effect, and the CA can pop up in many situations, so the correction may help.
