It was tha same in film, placing your exposure too far down (to the left) on the D log E curve would give good highlights and mid tones but horrible shadows with lots of grain because there was nothing else there.

If Stefan and I are correct then perhaps 1/3 or 1/2 stop more exposure might just do the trick.
It's always going to help, but sometimes you can't because a slower shutter speed or wider aperture might not be appropriate.

Often I prefer the noise and sharper to less noise and camera shake and/or motion blur

There's noise in every part of the picture. The lighter areas simply mask it better. Higher S/N ration.

More dynamic range = less noise.

The sensor is a linear device half of the information is gathered in the first (highest) stop/range of the sensor.
Every stop you go down you half the amount of information.
At least if we keep that line.
It does not go down by stops though and isn't perfect linear but at least it explains it easier.

When you've a higher dynamic range that means the first stop is much higher and so when you finally get to the darker parts you might not have so much sensor information left.
So the higher the dynamic range of the sensor the further you need to expose to the right in order to get the most in information.
That's also said in Cambridge in colour.


There is no need to believe you can test it yourself.

Take a white paper photograph it normally (it becomes grey), and then under and over expose it with 1 or 2 stops.
Correct the exposures so that they look at the normal exposed shot and compare them.
