A nice picture set, with exemplary composition.
If they were mine I would use "Levels" in Photoshop to up the contrast just a whisker. Not too much, otherwise they start to look unnatural, but a small increase will enhance the "bite" and the impact of the pictures.
If you don't have access to Photoshop or a program with a levels setting, then Brightness/Contrast instead.

would that be the levels in all 3 or just 2 and 3? I have played around with the curves before but not on these. Corel does have a levels option.

I would say all of them, but more so 2 and 3.
In a levels dialog box you will see a histogram with three sliders inderneath it. The histogram may not go from left to right the full distance, so pull the end sliders in till they touch the black histogram (not too much if it looks wrong) and then adjust the overall brightness with the centre slider.
Don't make it too severe an effect, backing off the right and left sliders if it's gone too far.

I have had a go at the levels on the Giraffe shot. I also did the curves a little and then noise and finally unmask sharpen! Is this noticable better to you? Its also a bigger size.

It's still a little weak for my taste, so I'd go for something more like this:

This is quite an extensive adjustment but it pulls up more drama IMHO. But what do you think? Better or too much?

I thought you might think it was a little dark. I almost lightened it more Although I have to say the colours on the day were more like mine as the weather was absolutely terrible - heavy rain and very misty and cloudy

I have gone for bringing out the colour of animals and tried not to wash the background out!

This is my latest attempt and I think we are all pretty close now!
Thanks for all your help I now have a much bigger portfolio of Tanzania photos to work with. Like Greynolds999 I also have quite a few which are either dark or seem over exposed and I have started to have a play with the levels, curves and histogram adjustment and they are showing great improvements. I realise that on the over exposed ones there will be burnt out areas that I can do nothing about, however, whereas before I thought of them as being rejects, I would now be happier to include some of them in an album or calendar

Photoshop is a great bit of kit! I have been using it for years...
I have always said that the best things for using it are your eyes! Just fire it up and have a play!
