Fabulous craft - last I heard the "Iris" was rotting on the Thames !

It was 6d ( 2 1/2p )to go across the last time I went on one - The Mountwood I think !

Ah happy days !

Sorry Tazza i thought you meant the Royal Iris of the Mersey, the one you mean is still rotting away on the Thames.

If that's HDR, it's pretty much the first such picture I have liked. Very subtly done, and the picture has a nice bustling feel to it, helped by the long lens.

George don't you feel that while subtle and sharp there is still that slight feel of being out of register? I look at it and my eyes go 'whoa there's something odd here'. HDR and moving objects must be a really tough task.

I do agree it has a nice feeling of getting on with things.

The best HDR I have seen was of an interior where there were exposures set for the windows so you could see outside, the main seating area and the darker corners. Very cleverly done and totally suitable - but static.

I love the picture - well done, Sir.

I'm still not sure about HDR in general - I've experimented with it but the end result was a world away from the real life image, and it's a brave person that tries it with moving objects.

Maybe I just don't "get it"?

Mike, I didn't say it was perfect! I really meant that the colours looked far more realistic than most HDR shots I have seen. Perhaps "restrained" would be a better word.

But I do like the sense of a busy sea road, and the crowded background really helps the shot.

Behind the ferry is the IOM Steam Packet pier, which I know very well.

George - my dad was a Manxman - Peel to be exact - and he used to travel regularly to Douglas from Liverpool (where he studied Dentistry at the Uni) on the King Orry,Manxman,Manx Maid,Snaefell,Ben my chree,Mona`s Isle,Lady of Mann to name a few.

He always knew the sailors and told we kids that the IOMSPC on their navy jumpers stood for "I often make sick people comfortable" - which of course we believed implicitly.

I remember in the later years watching "our" Sunbeam Talbot Supreme being loaded onto the deck by cradle and crane - scary stuff - thank goodness for RORO and the new generation of Seacats.

All best

A govag! You'll know one end of a kipper from another, then? I lived on little else for years.

Peel is going through something of a resurgence since they turned the old fishing harbour into a marina.

As for the ferries, I remember most of the ones you mention. The Lady was perhaps my favourite. A good boat for bad weather. These namby-pamby seacats turn tail and scuttle home if more than a gentle zephyr is forecast.

Blimey don`t start mentioning Zephyrs ( and Zodiacs lol )

Aaah ! the smell of kippers smoking in the sheds - went back in 2007 - very nostalgic - still Bl**dy expensive and 40 years behind the times - AND they`ve stopped the Copperpots except to Ramsey and Snaefell.Had 18 holes at Peel golf course where Grandma was lady captain back when.....the Glens all seemed smaller and the castle at Peel less exciting.Grandpa Aylen was the first Lloyds Bank manager on the Island and a Grand Master of the Glenfarba Lodge. My Great Uncle worked at Moores Manx Woollen Mills and one cousin still lives near Onchan and is involved with the TT and the rallying.

Happy happy days - hoping to go back with a friend and his partner next year all being well and split the cost of the Seacat.

Regards

The problem with the idea of home rule, is who will rule? The present Chief Minister (another Brown - the word seems to be a synonym for incompetence) is an electrician and needs five mates and three cups of tea to help him change a light bulb.

God forbid he should become President or whatever of the Republic of Man. He wouldn't know how to turn the lights out when everybody left.
