Got lucky at Waddesdon Manor today, just as I was looking at a possible shot through the viewfinder, this Robin landed on the railing, so got a couple of shots off quick before he flew away!

This is the original shot:-

just not sure what works out best composition wise.

Which of the following crops do you prefer, or of course, if neither, what would you do?!

Good capture! I am torn... I actually like the original full frame picture; maybe because the point of focus is just right, the blurring each side draws attention to the Robin. On that basis I think the first crop works similarly.

Number two. I like the out of focus front and back with the Robin in the middle.

this is one of those shots you could play with forever and still not decide on the best crop, the second one seems OK but I would darken the top right corner a bit.

I like the second one 'cos he looks like he's being approached by a miniature Victorian Robocop

Number 1 for me. I like the framing between the two OOF robocops. Actually they look more like lego men in safari hats.

I like the first image most of the three.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of these - superb! My screen does have the Robin a bit dark; is there any latitude for a small bit of dodging to lift it slightly? I notice that you had -0.7 ev exposure compensation dialled in - may I ask why? (I've made it a mission for 2010 to grapple with exposure!!)

Cheers

Maybe really nr 2. The attention going more to the robin.
Nr 1 is ok too.
Very nice capture.

Either way looks great but personally I prefer number one asd it seems a bit more than "just another bird photo".

Best wishes, Kris.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys, and the laugh!

Think Alan is right though, it is one I will keep coming back too and still won't make my mind up!

The -0.7EV was dialled in for a previous shot with a lot of reflections in it, didn't get chance to change it though, as I would have missed the shot otherwise!

Making it a resolution to post more photos this year, and certainly got off to a lucky start with this little fella. He even posed for me later on, but in the shade where there wasn't much light, so I used the onboard flash for it:-

When i'm trying to work out what sort of crop would look good, I use my browser window and drag the top, bottom and sides in and out until i see a good crop.

I would like to have seen the image with tight(ish) crops on both sides up to hefty's 'victorian robo cops' so that they frame the robin.
