Resizing and EXIF data / Software recommendations

It was mentioned in another thread that using Photoshop Elements 8 to resize a photo will leave only minimal EXIF data intact. I resize my pictures using GIMP - does anybody know if this will have the same effect? If so, is there a way to resize images without this happening? (And without using expensive software I don't have).

Whilst I'm on the subject I'm thinking of getting Lightroom 3 in the near-ish future. GIMP is good (and fast!) software but one has to use a separate RAW development application where necessary which is not the most efficient way to work. Is there any particular software people would recommend over Lightroom for a similar (or cheaper) price, and if so, why?

Thanks very much.

You can resize in Irfanview leaving the EXIF intact.

Don't think FastStone Photo Resizer affects EXIF either.

I'm LR user and always have been, so can't offer any thought on alternatives.

Thanks for the comments. I'm likely to get Lightroom some time unless anybody sells me on something better.

UFRaw and then GIMP for the rest of the sharpening and borders. UFRaw-Batch works well, but after using RAW+, I can already review before loading anything in UFRaw.

And yes, the latest version does now support the K5.

Thanks, I haven't tried UFRaw, I will give it a shot. So far I've been using the Pentax DCU software that comes with the K-5 when I need to edit RAW. It seems very slow and a touch unstable, having frozen up a couple of times when using it.

If you are up for, or have already, installed Ubuntu or some other Linux, Darktable is a free LR clone. At least it is intended to be once completed. See my post here.

I have Linux on my laptop but not on the iMac. I had a look around and see Darktable is available on MacOS via MacPorts, so I'll try that. Had some problems with MacPorts in the past though (applications failing to install), so I'm not counting any chickens.

Couldn't get Darktable to install. UFRaw doesn't seem to like the K-5 raw files. Have downloaded RPP (Raw Photo Processor) which seems to work fine.
