the effect does look special, seems like it boost clarity and vibrant and something more

The last kangaroo one just looks wrong!

Okay, this is the original with no sharpening after import:

Add sharpening:

Add Tonal Contrast filter:

The effect is much more pronounced on the elephant and the rhino, I think because they have splotchy skin. On the hairy animals it's more subtle.

Forgot to mention that the above tonal contrast filter shot is at the default (50%) settings.
This is the tonal contrast filter at maximum strength:

I think this shows the effect quite well, look how lumpy his ear looks compared to the original photo.

Looks interesting Tim, it almost look like tone-mapping that's used for HDR.
