If your camera happens to lock onto anything else to focus on, you're pretty much out of luck - I always either set mine to spot (if the subject is central) or pre-focus and turn the AF on remote off... (there may be better methods...)
When you're not looking in the viewfinder, if you're on a mode that selects a focus point automatically, you can never be sure just where that'll be...

I usually prefocus and switch off AF. With a smaller aperture, DOF can take care of some focusing error.

with the K10D you can also consider user selected focus point mode as an alternative to spot focus when the subject isn't central.

Is the main problem that the remote does not cause AutoFocus? Or that the camera does not focus where you expect?
There is an option to turn on/off AutoFocus on remote - [C Custom Setting] Menu. Make sure that is on.
[Edit]
I guess that is also what Classvino referred to, but I misread the first time around...

I have been doing some self portriture that requires I use the remote. I am finding that I need to try to focus first on an object near a place that I will be standing/sitting. It would be much easier if the remote triggered the autofocus, and it would actually work correctly.
Has anyone had this problem, or have any ideas about why it is not working as accurately as it should?
