Red ring around moon

We're not really talking here about using wide angle or short telephoto lenses to produce tiny moon images in a landscape, but more about close up moon shots.

I would suggest that any budding moon photographers should try different shutter speeds and, certainly with digital, have a look at the results straight away and make a decision based upon what they see.

There's no substitute for having a go at something and in this instance the exercise should not take very long.

Is 400mm on APS-C long enough for close moon shots?

Here is a couple of pics of my first moon phto. I built the 400mm F5 lens. I admit to just missing perfect focus. But I didn't have a split screen in my DS yet. FOV would be like a 600mm in 35mm film.

Sorry we took a left turn here.

At iso 800 and f4, the exposure should have been 1/8000. At f16 and iso 800, it should have been 1/500.

So I would actually start at iso 400 and f16. With a shutter speed of 1/250. And you may still have to adjust the speed a hair after a couple trial shots.

OOPS. These figures are for full moon or close to it.

Polchraine the frist photo is the original...not touch is that what you want? I did take a few more shot with driffent lens. Iwill put them on later.I will leave them as taken.

I'd say it is, just about. It's the lower limit for the K10D; I'd guess with good glass it would be a bit better with the extra pixels of the K20D/K7.

Thanks, but it's not as good as a couple that others have posted in recent times.

Clarky did very well - much better than mine - with a Bigma and the K10D (I'd like to think it's just the extra 100mm that did it ).

ISTR Mannesty has done some good ones too.

The first is still a JPG - do you have the original unprocessed, non-converted PEF or DNG.

I think it highly likely that Darlene shoots only JPG, so the original will be JPG and no PEF or DNG file exists.

I was fascinated with this thread as I love the moon (I am sure I will go there one day) so I thought I'd have a go tonight as it looked pretty clear as I walked home. Here is the result taken from my bedroom window at about seven o clock this evening...




I don't think it's too bad although not as good as many I have seen posted on here. To get this I used the DA* 300mm lens on my K7, mounted on a tripod and fired the camera using 2 second delay to try and avoid any camera shake. I set the camera on manual to f11 and 1/125th second shutter speed, ISO 100. Then in Photoshop elements I upped the contrast in an attempt to make the background really black, and tweaked a little with one or two of the sliders around brightness etc. to end up with this...

Don't know if that is helpful to any readers(?)

Not bad. The colors of the seas are accurate.
Full moon and close to it, is the hardest time to get a really good photo. Once it starts to shrink, shoot for the terminator areas. The added contrast really makes features pop out.

After looking through the forum I relise I need drifferent len...So when this happenes I will be proud to take a few shot and show them all to you mooners I did take a couple more shots of the moon, but they are not good much like the ones I already took Thanks for all the imput Great teachers...well learned
