Rectilinear v Fisheye

Inspired by another thread, and a coincidental look at a 10 to something Pentax fisheye today, I have to ask, why a fisheye? The barrel distortion seems an irritant to me, and in my eye contributes nothing positive.

They were originally produced for scientific purposes and to this end there are several different kinds of fisheye projection.

However, they became popular in the 1960s for "creative" and even fashion photography and have been ever since.

You can use programs though to correct the distortion and I've seen photos that are very pleasant even with the distortions, it's hard lens to master though.

My thoughts as well, however i can see the appeal these have to people
