Any good recovery software that can pull delete files from a memory card?

There are others out there, and they have a varying rate of success. You have to keep trying until you get what you need

BTW When you format a card (fast format not full format) you only normally delete the file table (like an index in a book). All the pages are still there just that you have no index to find them by.

Hence your files should be intact you just need a bit of softweare to put the index back together.

If the above is no good try putting "file recovery software" into a search engine - loads of results and one should do it.

For my business I use R-Studio from www.r-tt.com and it has never failed me yet.

R-Studio and R-undelete are from the same people.
I normally use R-Studio but its a little expensive for a one foo.

I've just run ZAR from http://www.z-a-recovery.com/ on a card I've formatted dozens of times an it just recovered 222 files froma card with nothing visable on it!

Not bad for a freebie but I'll keep to R-Studio for normal work. As Mannesty says it is good and reliable.

I'm glad to see this topic revisited as this was the subject of my first ever posting.
However, I've just run both ZAR and R-Undelete with very little success ZAR only recovers 9 images out of 270+ and R-Undelete recovers almost all but will only preview the first one or three.
When I insert the card in the camera, a DL2, I get memory card failure.

So please.

Interesting - if you really do have a physical failure on the card then nothing will recover. Maybe that's why there are big differences between the two.

I had a friend who had a Sandisk that died with a hardware failure - I tried absolutely everything. In the end they replaced it under warranty, but he lost the images

There were some other recovery packages, but if it's that badly gone, I don't hold out much hope.

I think I had come to the same conclusion about losing the images. Before I tried reformatting the card I had gone to the much maligned Jessops and they had managed to get a good percentage off, but they could not get them all.

I will now try to get it replaced - BTW (I'm learning the jargon) it's a "MyMemory" 1gb High Speed card. I don't think I'll be buying another one again.

Off topic - may I say what an amazing forum this is for expertise and good humour. It's quite addictive. I'm glad I joined.

I have used RescuePro (came free with a Sandisk memory card), mmCardRecovery www.digitalleo.com and DiskInternals Flash Recovery http://www.diskinternals.com/

Some programs are advertised as "Picture Recovery" software and only recognise files like JPG or TIF and fail to find RAW files.

I think you may mean "much criticised". "Maligned" is only appropriate if the statement was malicious and unfounded.

First I just wanted to mention that I used a card reader in an internet cafe, only downloaded the photos into the computer to then burn a DVD and the card itself ended up with one or two viruses on it. Don't know if that has any implications for possible damage to the camera itself...?

My immediate reaction was to format the card. However, I think this did not remove the virus - is that possible? If you can still recover images after formatting then the process doesn't get rid of all files on the card (e.g. the virus)?

As for the recovery software mentioned, which one/s recover K10D PEF or DNG files?

So, does anyone know if formatting the card removes the virus?

There are two phases to a virus:
1. Getting itself onto the media
2. Installing itself into the computer and becoming "alive"

If I plugged your card into my machine it would warn me, but wouldn't allow the virus to get to stage 2 (I use Eset's NOD32 on all our PCs which I highly recommend). If you don't have adequate AV protection then there's a chance that the virus could get onto your machine.

However, formatting the card in the camera will erase everything - virus included

But, it's always a good idea to make sure you have up-to-date AV files.
(That said I once installed NOD32 onto a laptop that had nearly 30 active viruses because the owner had had no AV protection at all. NOD32 wiped them all out with absolutely no fuss at all and the job was done in less that 30 min )

the nice german chap on the pentax tech support said he's not yet aware of viruses harming the camera (most viruses are geared towards an operating system e.g. windows) and agreed with you that formatting the card would remove any virus from the card. I guess the main thing was just to put a warning out there that when downloading INTO an infected computer you could get a virus on the card that could infect the next computer you download into.
