On my K10D when the RAW+ button is pressed I only get one pic. on my preview screen which the info button tells me is RAW+. Should there be two pics, a raw and a jpeg and if so how do I find them both and how would I get both onto my computer. Am I missing something basic in THE BOOK? Help Help Help Please Please Please.

What is on the SD card? There should be a .JPG and a .PEF.

Cheers Pete I just put the SD card in the reader and sure enough there they were. Now all I need is someone to tell me why we need to shoot both and what to do with the jpeg and the raw as I usually shoot one or the other depending on what, why, where, or who, I'm shooting.
Who uses both and why?

It may be useful to have both if you want to view or share the pictures quickly on a computer before using a RAW converter.

Otherwise I don't see the point if you have good conversion software that you are happy with.

Perhaps it's more ideal for those who generally prefer JPEGs - but want a RAW copy in case of the odd extra-special or difficult photo that might deserve more work.

Occasionally I might shoot RAW+.

I'll set the camera to boost the sharpening a bit, and maybe the saturation. Then I can show the unedited JPG to people without having to do anything to it, or look at it in something like Windows Picture viewer, also with no work.

Then the ones I like, I'll work on the RAW file.

But I have to confess, in recent times, I've just deleted most of the JPGs, and kept the RAWs - so much so that mostly I just use RAW now. Just in case I get one where I really need to pull detail out of the shadows...

I shoot RAW+ with the JPG set to 2MP, it gives me a useful JPG to print small prints with, email or share without having to use my PC (great during travel etc) and the little 2MP files take up very little file space.

Thanks for the answers people. All of them good and Robs from down under was very good. Rob does this mean if you want to go back to shooting just jpeg at 10MP you have to go into the prog. to change it again? I reckon it does. It's not a problem just a chore.

Yep, fortunately I never do, if the shots are worth printing using a 10MP file they are worth post processing from RAW IMO.

Actually, there's a good reason to shoot Raw+JPG. I was talking to this semi-famous photojournalist at my photo club's last meeting (/bragging) and he said he always shot raw+jpg because he trusted his camera enough for the quality of the JPG in case he needed to quickly send them back to Canada without the post-production hassle. BUT here's the key - he'd have the Raw files to prove that his shots weren't tampered with and that they were the 100% accurate/original visual recordings. (You can't modify a Raw file!) So he was legally covered for when his shots were used in magazines.

Fascinating stuff, eh?

Of course you can modify a raw file, more so than a jpeg. If you do a lot of post production work with your pics, then you shoot raw as this will allow you to achieve finer detail.
If you are happy with your pics straight out of the camera and don't do a lot of post production then shoot jpeg
A raw file is basically an uncompressed jpeg and of course that means a smaller file for a jpeg compared to the raw file. cheers

Nope, you're misunderstanding me. You cannot modify a Raw file. You can load a Raw file up, edit the image data that it holds and then save it out as a different file and as a different file format - but no matter what you do, you cannot change the original Raw file.

This is why that photojournalist used them as his "Proof" of the shot.

So what i understand you are saying is, If you edit the raw file you can then not save it as a raw file but as a jpeg or tiff

It would be technically possible to modify a RAW file - but I don't think any programs do.

With the program I use - Silkypix - as well as making JPEGs or TIFFs, it saves the "changes" you make to the image in a separate settings file rather than modifying the RAW file itsef. So at any time you can make further changes or start all over again with the original RAW.
