RAW [PEF] in PHOTOSHOP

When I have my K7 set to RAW DNG it comes up in Photoshop with no problem. When I shoot in RAW PEF Photoshop doesn't recognise the format?
The normal letters/numbers for the file are 100PENTX then each photo has its own number [IMGP etc.] and there is a thumbnail in Bridge.
For some reason [Most likely my stupidity] instead of 100PENTX for the file in Bridge it has 100_0212 this being the date the photo was taken.
e.g. 100_3011 would be photos taken on 30/11/09 and this is what Photoshop doesn't recognise? In Bridge each photo still has its own number [IMGP etc.] in the normal way but there's no thumbnail just a small icon.
When I shoot in JPG I still get this new file number 100_2711 [DATE] but the photos come up in Bridge with a thumbnail and their normal number
[IMPG etc.] and they come up in Photoshop both in the normal way and also in raw if I set it up to open JPG in RAW.
WHAT-o-WHAT have I done wrong? HELP HELP CHEERS Vic

EDIT In Bridge. Inthe folder number and in removable disk it still shows the usual DCIM first. CHEERS again Vic.

Photoshop doesn,t recognise pef because it's a pentax raw file format as far as I know. Stick with DNG.

Mattox. Photoshop does recognise PEF. It did with my *istD and it does with my K10 and it did with my K7 until this has happened. CHEERS Vic.

You need to update Adobe Camera Raw I think... BUT not all versions can be updated to include the K-7 PEF's I don't think.

There may be work arounds, but If updating doesn't work I'd stick to DNG until you can find a solution.

Edit: just saw that you have been able to open K-7 PEFs ok until now, so you may as well ignore my update suggestion.

What else has changed on the computer Vic ? Have you installed any new programs or updated any others ? There could be a conflict issue perhaps ?

RR. I've just checked. I now have Ver. 1.02 in camera. Pentax updates. Pentax digital utility 4. Also some codec updates to show PEF on/in windows. Other than that. Nothing new. CHEERS Vic.

What warning does it give you when you try to open a PEF file?

Firstly the directory name should not effect the format of the picture - i.e. changing the menu settings from directry name of 100PENTX to 100_0212 does not change the PEF format. If you are convinved it worked before just change it back and try it.

Secondly the camera firmware and Pentax Imaging version will not have an effect on Adobe Bridge.

If you double click on a PEF from within Windows explorer does it open in the Photoshop RAW processing window. If not then you will need to update the Adobe Camera RAW from the adobe web site to one which will work with CS3 and has a codec for the K-7. If that is not availlable then shoot DNG. DNG on the K-7 is smaller than on the K20D so theres no longer a size penalty compared to shooting PEF. (I get 100 DNG+JPG on K20D and 130 DNG+JPG on K-7 using 4GB cards both at max size and quality).

Bob. I didn't change the name from 100PENTX to 100_0212 [the date] in first place so I wouldn't know how to change it back.

I've just taken a photo of my desk in RAW/PEF with my K10 and everything was perfect just as it used to be with the K7.

I still think I have inadvertently changed something on the K7.

Come on you tech. guys I'm sure someone must have the answer out there somewhere.

There must be an option somewhere to reset all custom functions or "factory reset" this may solve it. Of course you'll need to set your custom settings back up as you like afterwards.

This is very easy to resolve and isn't a camera problem, you just need to download the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw. I had the same problem when I moved from the DS to the K20d

Mnnnn... I think you may have changed something on the K7 rather than Adobe; as you say you it was working before. The folder name 100-0212 is that used by the camera on the SD card, but can be changed I believe.

- Another thought: are the image files showing the correct file extension? .DNG or .PEF ? Windows may have got the file association muddled as you say they do not open with a double-click.

Alan. Hi. In Bridge all the image files are showing correctly. jpg. DNG. PEF. The DNG shows thumbnails in Bridge. The jpg shows thumbnails in Bridge. The PEF just shows a small icon in Bridge.

The jpg's open in Camera RAW. [I set it to do that]

All of this even though the file number is no longer 100PENTX on all of them.

Today the file number will be 100_0312 It changes with the date.

This is why I think I have changed something in the camera? as the folder number used to read 100PENTX.

Does anybody know how to change the folder name on the SD card back to 100PENTX in the camera.?

I have read the book and read the book and I am still reading the book but so far no joy.

Am I a right NUMPTY? Or have I found a hidden programing fault?

Ah, Settings menu 2. Just above the 'file name' option is 'Folder name' which has two options 'date' and 'pentx'.

I've just had a look at the K-7 and to change the folder name press Menu then the set up menu(the spanner) until number 2 is surrounded by a green box, then scroll down to Folder Name and change it to PENTX.
