Question for AF360FGZ/AF500FTZ users

I've been trying to find out what the safe maximum flash trigger voltage on the *istD is as I'd like to use my Vivitar 285HV and am worried about potentially frying the camera. Pentax refuse to answer the question, so I was wondering if anyone using one of the Pentax recommended flashguns could kindly measure the voltage and let me know what it is please, as that would give me some idea as to whether my 285 is similar.

This question is posted frequently. Some people mutter about high voltages and others call for a ruling from "authoritative sources", which, of course, don't exist.

I always reply that I have used lots of flash guns over the years from lots of different manufacturers and never had a problem.

I wouldn't quite go so far as calling this concern an "urban myth", but in nearly 50 years using a camera I have yet to hear or read of anybody who has actually experienced a "fried" camera.

This is a modern gun designed for modern cameras. It would be suicidal on Vivitar's part to produce flash guns that fried cameras. If there were problems you can bet somebody would have heard about them.

I've posted this question elsewhere too, and find most people feel the risk of damaging the camera is very low. On this basis, plus Vivitar tech support suggesting (with no guarantees!) that there shouldn't be any issues with the 285HV and the *istD I'm going to go ahead and use it.

I'm sure you'll have no problem. There's no shortage of people who like to warn of dangers, but press them for facts and they suddenly go quiet.
