I read an article on this the other day, about how comfortable a buyer felt that they would be looked after by the company. This was both with regards to system cameras (ones that required non standard lenses etc) and with regards to future firmware support to deliver future features back to older model lines. (Apple seems to do this well for instance with their fleet wide iOS upgrades etc).

With the Q and MX-1 both being discontinued I can't help but see a heap of development energy being wasted here.

There is still the Q7 and the MX-1 could come back as a Ricoh

B&H don't seem to be a great indication of what is or isn't discontinued. We've bee here before, with them marking products thus and then finding supplies are still plentiful elsewhere.

I suppose there are different degrees of "discontinued". Even at the factory items will be made in batches, so it's only discontinued when irrevocably the tooling has worn out and there's a decision made never to make any more. Or the product has been updated, making the last one redundant.

Or "discontinued" in a particular market, as supplies dwindle and no more are ordered for an area.

The FA 50mm f/1.4 is a classic example of a "discontinued" product that seems to have managed to survive in that state for several years so far. I suspect they made some more as demand went up again.

I believe B&H often mark items as "discontinued" just because they don't have stock. Take it with a pinch of salt.

That's good advice. The last time I placed an order for an item, they emailed me to say it was out of stock and would be available within the week. They could have just marked it as discontinued.

I'll drop them a line with that one and they can mark this as discontinued as they are out of stock link
