let me use an analogy, with booze.
think of a proper exposure(at any given iso) as a combination of aperture, shutter.
now pretend you're mixing a black russian. You got vodka (say aperture), and you got kaluah (say shutter) that your going to mix (porportionally for any given sized glass).
do you like you black russians a little on the sweet side? (two parts kaluah, one part vodka) or not so sweet (two parts vodka one part kaluah?)?
the important thing is that however you mix it up, you must fill the glass full.
therefore the program line will affect how the camera biasses the exposure, but the exposure (as in how much light hits the sensor) should be the same.
Quite brilliant!!!

Ratcatcher...
I'm one of those that usually have nothing better to do than answer other peoples basic questions.
I work at home. I am a stay at home dad. I live in a rural area.
Most of my friends stopped hanning around about the time they found out I was a housewife with a baby.
Between house work, child care, portraits, video work, I got three computers running constantly and the temptation to flip through a couple forums between edits/renders/diapers is too tempting. In fact some weeks it's my only contact with other people.
I read your first post.
I posted an answer.
My first answer also answered your second question...before you asked it.
The two things I like about this forum are:
a) people are friendly here.
b) you ask a question, you get answers, FAST.
very rarely does anybody ask a question here, that wasn't asked before, so it would stand to reason that, people could do a search on the forum, and find the answer easily....so why get upset? Couldn't others just as easily get upset for having the same questions that have already been asked?
I personally love a good community where people share so much.
There would be no point in comming here for me if it were any other way.

Why is it that every time a simple question is put forward eveyone has to say what they believe is right or wrong and move away from the original question. It does'nt help those who really want a straight answer to what has been asked.
When a question relates to something that is explained fairly clearly in the manual, one assumes that the questioner is after something rather more than the manual provides - thus the discussion wanders down different paths.
Of course, just occasionally somebody comes along who has never read the manual, and isn't about to start now when there are all these obliging folk around with nothing better to do than answer basic questions.
But these obliging folk need to learn to stick rigidly to the question, lest a reprimand should come their way.
I think we should consider charging for answering questions. If we are not permitted to enjoy ourselves, we shall have to seek compensation in another form.
