have not yet invested in any decent image software yet. Pentax Camera Utility loaded on work computer last week and now it hangs on the dialog box and does not load. also have tried Serif Photoplus 10 which worked last week opening a jpeg file.

my question is do i need a supercomputer to open a DNG file from my K5!!!!

photoplus shows not responding as soon as i try and open a single DNG file.
computer is xp professional 64 bit, 3 ghz processor with 1.25gb or ram and i have tried opening the DNG files with no other programs or unneccesary processes running.

any advice?

I have used PhotoPlus for many years. I use PPX4, I also use Adobe CS2.
Photoplus 10 should open DNG (raw) files ok. Any PhotoPlus software before that wouldn't. I might be wrong but I think your problem might be your 64 bit system, I don't think PP10 will cope with this. PPX2 and above can. Hope this helps.

Hi,

I don't run windows but this website mentions 2 possible solutions:

ie you could try running PP10 as admin, or try running it in compatability mode.

Or you could install wow64 (see this Microsoft link) and run the software under wow64.

Your best option is to invest £50 or so in Photoshop Elements (latest version). Then at least you'll have a hugely knowledgeable community of users to help you out.

Or try the free route with RawTherapee.

as my current home computer has died, as did my 1000 quid laptop, i have decided to hold out on any software purchases for the moment.

anyone know why the Pentax Camera Utility would have suddenly decided to hang, it is the 4.3 version??

Best thing to do would be to check the log files and see if a driver or bit of hardware is reporting a problem, could be an update from M$ or any other update thats caused the issue. I take it that it ran OK before and would open Jpeg's fine?

Have/did you update anything else (or have it done for you by the confuser) that PCU was reliant upon?

found the answer re the digital camera utility problem. had to delete a checkinfo file in local settings/application data/pentax as i was getting a runtime error. now it is working.

Not really. I have done it (with chrissinkpen as a witness) on an Apple TiBook 400mhz and Elements 4 for Mac. Yes, that really is 400 mhz.

Perhaps the big question is:
"How much memory do you have installed?" that can make more difference than anything else.

I have found the 'Pentax Digital Camera Utility' horribly slow and unstable on both PC and Mac (and the Mac is no slouch with a fast 3GHz 64 bit dual core processor and 4GB of ram). Every other Raw processing software I've tried (RawTherapee, UFRaw, RPP, Lightroom) runs much faster and more reliably.

I've heard folks say the Pentax Software is perfectly good, but in my experience almost anything else works better (sorry Pentax).

Glad you got it sorted. As noted, your machine is perfectly adequate, but perhaps third party software is worth a look in any case.

There is a lots of free editing software around that is worth looking at, eg

Photoscape, Paint.NET, Irfanview, Faststone, GIMP.
