Preparing for Haiti Departure

At work we are putting together a surgical team and will hopefully be leaving in the next few days for Haiti. In my last minute preparations, aside from work, I would like to capture what is going on there with my trusty pentax. Looking through my gear I think I am going to go light. Which means, 1 camera and 1 lens. I have almost decided that I will take my K10, 3 batteries, 2 sd cards (6GB in total), and my DA 16-50 SDM lens. Its a hard choice for a hard trip and traveling light is going to be number 1 priority. I will shoot in jpeg and the 16-50mm will give me enough range for photojournalism type shots, and shooting almost always in iso 100 this lens will give me that low F stop in need.

Any thoughts, suggestions out there for what i might also need, or techniques that i could apply to make this work/photo shoot as effective as possible

Best wishes to you all Matt. I hope you are all prepared for what lies ahead. As an outsider it`s difficult to imagine life (and death) on this sort of scale. I can`t offer any advice except don`t be afraid of using your camera in all situations, remember your own humanity.

Make sure that your gear is fully insured - I wouldn't fancy taking my DSLR into an environment like that. I'd probably go for something like an MX instead as they're virtually indestructible. Good luck!

Best wishes and Good Luck.

In your position, I think I might be inclined to take a couple more SD cards. You can never have too much memory.

Be safe, I'd seriously consider taking a compact and not to draw attention to yourself or collegaues as the violence seems to be intensifying. Have a safe journey and I hope you are able to provide some help and comfort to those in an awful situation

Good luck.

If you have the time and money a portable media thingy that lets you down load images to a hard drive might be a worthy investment.

As for advice, I am sure I read somewhere on this forum, that in the days of manual focus and film bodies, about setting aperture priority, and using an f-stop to give a good depth of field and a pre set focus point, then just shooting. I am sure some can correct me if I have this wrong

Maybe a water proof bag to keep it all in.

f8 and be there!

Make sure the kit is insured. An image tank is a good idea.

My thoughts will be with you, and all your colleagues doing a fantastic job in a terrible situation. Keep safe.
